HALO Storage Operating System

Enterprise-grade Storage Made Simple
Nimbus‘ 64-bit HALO storage operating system is a comprehensive software suite that provides end-to-end administration, data protection, and monitoring of H-class systems through one intuitive Web-based interface. Unlike traditional server operating systems, HALO is engineered specifically for storage, providing robust availability with the simplicity of an appliance. With storage virtualization, RAID, and policy-based caching, HALO gives administrators unparalleled flexibility in provisioning storage capacity, maximizing utilization and optimizing application performance. Snapshots, cloning, volume migration, synchronous mirroring, and asynchronous replication provide end-to-end data protection and disaster recovery as standard features at no additional cost. Real-time and historical reporting tracks key performance and environmental metrics, proactively alerting administrators of potential issues before they occur via email and SNMP alerts.

Storage Virtualization Technology
Storage virtualization enables organizations to best align available capacity with application requirements. Administrators can define virtual storage pools based on tiers, ranging from economical nearline storage to fully mirrored primary storage for mission-critical servers. With virtualization, storage becomes an agile, versatile, and efficiently-utilized resource. Users can provision and expand volumes in seconds, add new storage on-the-fly, and repurpose existing storage as requirements change. Volumes can even span enclosures, giving administrators the ability to scale capacity and performance while keeping upfront purchases low. A policy-based caching engine lets users dynamically enable cache on a volume basis to maximize IO performance.

Multi-protocol Unified Storage
HALO provides unified iSCSI, NFS, and CIFS support for block and file storage in one system. Advanced features like reserve/release and persistent reservations, prerequisites for virtualization, clustering, and SAN file systems, are supported. iSCSI also supports error recovery level 2 for the most robust data integrity available, non-disruptive configuration changes, and native 10 GbE performance not possible elsewhere. NFS supports thin-provisioning in virtualization environments to maximize storage utilization without preallocation. CIFS supports Microsoft Active Directory, easing integration into existing Windows domains. HALO is also extensible to support emerging protocols like FCoE.

Enterprise Data Protection and Reporting
HALO provides RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, and JBOD. Powerful snapshot and cloning features create mountable, point-in-time images of production storage volumes that can be used for instantly restoring individual files. Snapshots and clones can be scheduled, and policies can be set to retire them automatically over time. Volumes can be migrated across tiers. Synchronous and asynchronous continuous replication provides disaster recovery using sector-level transfers and throttling to minimize WAN bandwidth usage. Automatic health monitoring proactively watches for deteriorating drive health and notifies administrators before failures occur. A graphical dashboard provides insight into real-time and historical system health and performance.

All-inclusive Software, not Headaches
H-class systems with HALO are complete, turn-key solutions from day one. Unlike competing products that seem to always demand new client packs or feature upcharges, HALO includes all software features free-of-charge and with no licensing fees of any kind. All Nimbus customers receive free software updates for the duration of their support agreement, including new features, not just maintenance releases. When technical support is needed, one click generates a convenient diagnostics package to submit to Nimbus technicians via an easy-to-use Web-based support portal. With its comprehensive feature set and amazingly easy-to-use user interface, HALO makes enterprise storage simple.
